Ukraine’s Survival Now Depends on Elon Musk — And We Should be Worried

In the early days of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Elon Musk made headlines by sending thousands of Starlink internet kits to Ukraine through his company SpaceX.

Starlink is a satellite-based internet network in orbit, which means it would be difficult infrastructure for Russia to attack at scale.

His move was widely praised by Ukraine and her allies.

Fast forward to today and the Ukrainian military is all but dependent on Starlink for battlefield command and control.

By using the secure messaging app Signal, along with an internet connection provided by Starlink, both Ukrainian civilians and the military can communicate securely.

It’s not an overstatement to say that without Starlink, Ukraine’s defense would be an order of magnitude more difficult.

What’s more, Starlink enables Ukraine to counter Putin’s propaganda and supports Ukraine’s information war.

Then, on October 3rd, Musk proposed a “peace plan” on Twitter which, by the way, was nearly identical to Kremlin talking points.
