I’ve written in the past about Ukraine’s unique knack for combining disparate technologies to solve battlefield problems.

They are very much a “MacGyver” army — so named after the 1980s TV action character who could create a complicated escape tool out of a simple paper clip.

Their ingenious, inventive armed forces have a proud history of smashing together systems that were never meant to work together: For instance, attaching the U.S.-made JDAM smart bomb to Ukrainian MiG-29s.

Now, Ukraine is using tech created for gamers to remotely control machine gun turrets.

Ukraine wasn’t always flush with cash.

Before the United States started sending large volumes of greenbacks to Ukraine for defense, Ukraine used crowdfunding to fill gaps in military technology.

Over the years, Ukraine has used crowdfunding to pay for everything from drones to hospitals. One of the most popular websites is The People’s Project. A publication that I used to write for did a great writeup of Ukraine’s 2014 crowdfunding efforts.
