Ukraine Sniper Nears World Record by Killing Russian 1.68 Miles Away
The longest recorded sniper kill is held by a Canadian sniper (name withheld) in May of 2017 at 3,540 meters or 2.19 miles. The Canadian was serving in Joint Task Force 2 and was in Iraq at the time of the kill and shot an ISIS militant.
Now, Ukraine claims one of its snipers took out a Russian soldier at a distance of 1.68 miles (2,710 meters), knocking the number 2 record holder, British soldier Craig Harrison, to the number 3 spot.
Harrison hit two Taliban machine gunners in Afghanistan from 1.53 miles (2,475 meters) away.
Dramatic video shared by the Ukrainian military’s Office of Strategic Communications shows the Russian soldier dropping after being struck by the round.
2,710 meters is the equivalent of about 30 football fields.
“The occupier was eliminated by a precise shot of our special forces,” the government organization said Sunday.
The special forces that Ukraine is referring to belong to units of the Ukrainian National Guard.
More than just shooting exceptionally well, modern snipers must also be masters of stalking, range estimation, enemy observation, and concealment.
