Thanks to Ukraine, Poland Wants to Buy 486 HIMARS

They want to build Europe’s most dangerous artillery force

U.S. Soldiers assigned to Able Battery, 3rd Battalion, 321st Field Artillery Regiment, 18th Field Artillery Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps, fire a M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) during a live fire exercise at Camp Tapa, Estonia, April 16, 2025. Poland is quickly becoming Europe’s only military “superpower.”

In what would be the largest HIMARS procurement in Europe, Warsaw is negotiating with the United States for up to 486 M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems as part of its Homar-A program.

That’s not a typo. Four. Eight. Six. If it happens, it will redefine NATO’s firepower east of the Vistula.

As of early 2025, no contract has been signed, but the intent is crystal clear: Poland wants a next-generation rocket artillery force scaled for high-intensity, peer-level conflict. Deliveries could begin as early as 2026, and local integration with Polish chassis and command systems is already planned.

But here’s the bigger story: Poland is buying the deep-strike capability that has defined Ukraine’s battlefield successes since late 2023.

Poland’s Rise: From Buffer Zone to Firepower Hub

For most of the post-Cold War era, Poland was NATO’s eastern doorstep, a forward staging area, a tripwire force, a buffer. That posture died on February 24, 2022. Since then, Poland has stopped playing defense and started building a warfighting force that can not only hold the line but strike back hard.
