Rare US Special Forces Vehicle Spotted in Ukraine

6 min readApr 8, 2025

It appears that Ukraine’s special operations community just added a rare tool to its kit — and it arrived without fanfare, press releases, or Pentagon briefings.

The Flyer 72-LD (Light Duty) tactical vehicle, designated the M1297 A-GMV in US Army service, has now been spotted in Ukrainian hands.

Specifically, it’s been confirmed in use by the elite 4th Separate Special Purpose Regiment “Ranger”, part of Ukraine’s NATO-standard Ranger Corps under the Special Operations Forces (SSO).

The first visuals emerged via open-source footage on March 31, showing the vehicle in active use — a quiet reveal for one of America’s most specialized, mission-proven off-road platforms.

And if that vehicle looks familiar, it should: it’s a US special forces staple, built for speed, air mobility, and complex operations behind enemy lines.

Make no mistake, the Flyer 72 is a unique tool — and its arrival in Ukraine signals another escalation in Western support, albeit one that’s being handled very carefully.

A Silent Transfer, a Loud Capability Boost

The Flyer 72-LD’s arrival in Ukraine wasn’t announced.

No State Department readout.
