There’s a lot of hype right now in the media about whether Ukraine is actively working on a nuclear bomb — so much so, that the Russian Federation has officially made a public response today saying they will not allow Ukraine to go nuclear.

So, let’s pour some cold water on this and figure out what the truth is.

This story actually caught me by surprise… And I’ve been covering Ukraine since 2013 as a journalist. It just never occurred to me that Ukraine would benefit from building itself a nuke.

Of course, they used to be the caretakers of Soviet nukes, but the Budapest Memorandum put the kibosh on that.

This all started at the European Council summit in Brussels on Thursday where President Zelensky said, “NATO countries are not at war. People are all alive in NATO countries. And thank God. That is why we choose NATO. Not nuclear weapons.”

It is important to note that Zelensky later clarified at a press conference that Kyiv is “not building nuclear weapons.”

Now, the German tabloid BILD is reporting that an unnamed senior Ukrainian official “specializing in weapons procurement” reportedly said Ukraine could build a nuclear bomb within weeks during a closed meeting a few months prior.
