The AI Arms Race Has Started — And Regulators Are Not Prepared

Rant start-

I just watched a video that scared the shite out of me.

50% of AI researchers believe there is a 10% or greater chance that humans go extinct from our inability to control AI.

So, let me ask you a question before we begin: If half of all aircraft engineers said there was a 10% chance that the plane you were about to get on would crash, would you get on it?

That was a question posed by Tristan Harris and Aza Raskin during a presentation to a private gathering in San Francisco on March 9th, 2023.

The talk, recorded in this excellent and terrifying video, focused on the future of large-language model AIs.

We are currently hurtling toward an existential crisis that makes solving climate change easy by comparison.

It’s a crisis of our own making, a crisis that lawmakers and regulators don’t fully understand, and a crisis that will be here in a few short years — no time at all when compared to the slow…
