I raised my kids to be contentious of other humans around them. I told them to try to reduce the net suffering in the world by having awareness of how you are interacting with the world and people around you - including and especially strangers.

I have a theory that the same people who pull out their phones in a dark movie and distract everyone behind them with their bright ass screens are the same people who don’t push shopping carts back to the corral because “that’s the employees’ job.” These people actually believe that they are the main character in a world that was built exclusively for them. The inability to get out of your own head temporarily and attempt to experience the world through someone else’s eyes shows, in my humble opinion, a very low level of social and emotional intelligence.
