How Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine Triggered a Global Food Shortage
India recently banned all wheat exports.
Due partly to the war in Ukraine, and a blistering heatwave brought on by worsening climate change, India’s production has been slashed leading to record high domestic wheat prices at home.
India’s export ban is an example of one nation making a decision to protect its citizens at the expense of rising global food prices.
Do you blame them?
A government’s sole responsibility is the protection of its citizens.
Despite this, the G7 condemned India’s decision because of the effect it would have on global food security.
But India is just one nation.
What if other wheat exporters followed suit?
“If everyone starts to impose export restrictions or to close markets, that will worsen the crisis,” German agriculture minister Cem Ozdemir said at a news conference in Stuttgart. “We call on India to assume its responsibility as a G20 member.” Ozdemir said.
