Listen up, class. Today I want to discuss with you a very dark time in world history: The Third Global War that started in 2024.

Please close your Holo-chats and pay attention. That means you, Xander. Taylor and Travis’ grandkids are not that interesting.

By the early ’20s, the once-cherished vision of a global order steered by rules, international law, and the guiding hand of the United Nations — with the European Union as a moral vanguard and the UN Security Council as the arbiter of international disputes — had faded into history.

This is the world that I was raised in, a time of transition between the Cold War and a new era of peace. The old days of great power competition were behind us. The United States and its allies “won” the Cold War; and thankfully so.

Could you imagine a world ruled by the Soviet politburo?

The 1990s were a euphoric time to be an American. The future was ours to shape as we saw fit.

Finally, we could champion human rights globally and forge our futures by leveraging high technology and international cooperation. And we had Grunge and the TV show “Friends,” which is somehow still popular today.
